Job summary

The Lake Superior YMCA in Hermantown, MN is seeking a part-time swim instructor and lifeguard to lead swimming lessons and supervise class aides with prepared lesson plans and a focus on safety.

You will build relationships with students and parents, maintain attendance and progress records, and uphold YMCA policies. This role offers growth opportunities, employee perks, and required CPR/AED/Lifeguard certs within 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 16.
  • CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, and Oxygen (preferred).
  • Demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor v6 Certification required within 6 months of hire.

Essential Functions
  • Instructs swimming lessons, having prepared lesson plans accordingly. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e.,attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules,regulations,and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.Reports ondamaged equipment.
  • Opportunity for teaching private swim lessons is available upon availability.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not have any supervisory roles.

This position operates in and around a pool area. Sometimes the floor will beslippery,or the working environment will seem humid.

Physical Demands

The employee is required to perform all skills required for Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications. While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; feel; reach with arms and hands. Employee must be able to talk, taste, smell, and see (both near and far). Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Lifeguards must be able to remain alert and focused on all pool-related activities, remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, as well as hear and distinguish distress signals. Required abilities include the ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, and communicate verbally by projecting one’s voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

Required Qualifications/Experience
  • Minimum age of 16
  • Certifications: CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid, and Oxygen (preferred)
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor v6 Certification required within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Lifeguard certification and at least one (1) year experience working with youth

Travel is not required for this position.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position. The pool is open seven days a week and hours will depend on the requirements of the aquatics department.
