Job summary

YMCA Swim Instructors are responsible for the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all participants in their class, teaching personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games and sports, and rescue through explanation and demonstration.

They plan and prepare each class, maintain supervision, demonstrate in the water, enforce pool rules, prepare session plans and records, communicate with parents, attend trainings, and arrive early to set up equipment.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA or American Red Cross swimming instructor certification.
• Current CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a pool environment.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for safety and well-being of participants in the pool during class.
• Maintains constant supervision and control of the class at all times.
• Provides encouragement to participants while making corrections of their swim strokes to avoid development of bad habits.
• Ability to get into the water and demonstrate for every class.
• Enforces all pool rules in a courteous yet firm manner.
• Prepares class session plans, record sheets on each participant, skill evaluations of each participant, communication with the parents and administering and collecting parental evaluations of the class.
• Attends weekly staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Reports to work 15 minutes before class begins to set up all equipment.
• Cleans up equipment and returns it to its proper location after class.
• Stays on deck to assist lifeguards until all participants have left the pool area.
• Performs related work as required.
