Job summary

YMCA Swim instructors teach private and group swimming lessons to children and adults, following prepared lesson plans and YMCA guidelines. They build authentic relationships with students and parents, promote safety, and manage class equipment and records.

Candidates must be 16 years or older and hold YMCA Swim Instructor Certification (or achieve within 90 days), plus CPR, AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certification. Strong organizational and communication skills are required.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age or older.
• Ability to instruct both private and group swimming lessons.
• Demonstrated knowledge of swim strokes and YMCA safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Instructs private or group swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans.
• Builds effective relationships with students and parents; encourages parent involvement.
• Maintains records such as attendance and progress reports; ensures safety and equipment is in good condition.
• Attends staff meetings and training; follows pool safety rules and procedures.
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

Job description

Swim lesson instructors help children and adults learn to be safe, confident and active in the water. Each instructor is provided with a curriculum designed to teach and build skills from basic floatation and water movement to advanced stroke technique. A swim instructor must be able to manage classes, plan activities to aid learning and provide the feedback so that students become the best swimmer they can be. Swim instructors must be able to teach, lead, organize and demonstrate the proper skills needed to swim.Essential FunctionsInstructs private or group swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plansBuilds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programsMaintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures and pool rules. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
