Job summary

The YMCA of Southeast Ventura seeks Swim Instructors to lead engaging lessons for all ages and skill levels at our pools. This role emphasizes instruction and water safety, fostering a positive learning environment to support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 years.
• Comfort around water with basic swim skills.
• Previous swim instruction experience is a plus.
• Must obtain YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSL) within 30 days.
• Must obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED within 30 days.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to follow directions, work independently and as part of a team.
• Complete pre-employment trainings (paid where applicable).
• Criminal background clearance required for 18+.

Responsibilities

• Plans and delivers swim lessons using YMCA-approved curriculum and skill progressions.
• Creates a positive, engaging, and inclusive environment for all participants.
• Ensures adequate practice time for skill development.
• Provides clear instruction, feedback, and encouragement to support skill development.
• Recognizes and corrects improper techniques with constructive coaching.
• Promotes water safety, personal growth, and enjoyment in every lesson.
• Maintains awareness of participants and pool environment for safety.
• Communicates and enforces pool rules, policies, and guidelines.
• Ensures instructional equipment is prepared and in good condition.
• Keeps accurate class records and participant progress.
• Responds to incidents and follows YMCA procedures for reporting.
• Participates in required staff trainings, meetings, and development opportunities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
