Job summary

University of Idaho is seeking the SVUB Community Outreach Coordinator to recruit, serve, and track students at Kellogg/Wallace while supporting six-weeks summer programming and ongoing year-round activities.

You will work with SVUB staff to implement mentoring, tutoring, advising and counseling, coordinate field trips and college visits, and travel as needed to engage local schools and partners.

Silver Valley Upward Bound has a strong focus on engaging with thetarget communities of Kellogg and Wallace in a meaningful,collaborative way that offers enriching opportunities for thosecommunities in a way that strengthens partnerships and respects thevalues and traditions of community members. This position is one oftwo outreach staff serving the Silver Valley Upward Bound (SVUB)program. SVUB serves 65 students per year between the targetschools of Kellogg High School and Wallace Jr/Sr High School.

The Community Outreach Coordinator is primarily based at one targetschool and is responsible for recruiting, serving, and tracking thestudents at that school. During the academic year, this positionworks with students in both individual and group settings,providing them with services such as mentoring, tutoring, advising,and counseling in order to help students go on to college. Thisposition will work closely with the other outreach staff member tomeet annual recruitment numbers and serve the appropriate number ofstudents. Other academic year activities may include developing andimplementing student activities, workshops, and field trips, someof which may include overnight components, such as college visits,or career fairs.

The Community Outreach Coordinator will also recruit new studentsas needed each year, often through informal classroom presentationsand student referrals. During the summer, the community outreachcoordinator works with a team to develop and implement six weeks ofresidential summer programming. This varies in nature by year butoften includes travel and some overnight stays (such as during maincampus visits in Moscow or the MOSS campus in McCall, or duringcapstone trips to other areas). Past capstone trips have been toSeattle, Alabama, and Los Angeles. This program includestransporting students, supervising students, developing activitiesand engaging in two weeks of informal instruction in literature andcomposition.

Required Experience:

• Experience with concepts and factors related to educationalopportunity for populations including low-income andnon-traditional students
• Implementing the following into student outreach: concepts andfactors related to educational opportunity
• Experience working independently; using project targets todevelop and schedule student activities, meet recruitment andstudent contact goals, create connections with target areastakeholders, document services and schedule timeappropriately
• Experience with editing and writing business correspondenceusing proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in applicationmaterials
• Experience in program planning and implementation andconducting independent research
• Experience in student service delivery; in planning andcoordinating educational activities; teaching, supervising, orcounseling non-traditional students

Required Education:

• Bachelors Degree

Required Other:

• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to meetrequirements for driving university vehicles
• Ability to work nonstandard hours including evenings andweekends when necessary
• Ability to travel, occasionally overnight
• Ability to travel to visit with potential students where theyare located, e.g. local educational institutions, public agenciesand community organizations
• Ability to Live on-site to supervise students during six-weeksummer program

Additional Preferred:

• Master's degree in relevant field OR valid Idaho teaching orcounseling license
• Skills with using computer operation and software programs
• Knowledge of: risk management as it relates to college goingprocesses and procedures
