Job summary

Horrocks is seeking a hardworking Survey Technician Intern to support survey crews on a Forest Service project in the High Uintas, Cottonwood Heights, UT. This hands-on internship offers field experience in a rugged mountain environment and the chance to contribute to real projects alongside experienced surveyors.

The role emphasizes learning basic surveying techniques, equipment handling, and teamwork, with training provided and approximately 2–3 months duration starting at the end of August.

Qualifications

  • Interest in surveying or related fields preferred.
  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated; hands-on experience welcomed.
  • Enjoys hiking and outdoor work.
  • Willing to hike several miles carrying equipment.
  • Willing to work in mountainous remote environments; training provided.
  • 2–3 month availability starting late August.

Responsibilities

  • Assist survey crews on a Forest Service project.
  • Carry and set up survey equipment on rugged terrain.
  • Collect accurate field measurements and survey data.
  • Identify and document project features in the field.
  • Learn basic surveying techniques under supervision.
  • Maintain and organize survey equipment and supplies.
  • Work as part of a team to complete daily field tasks safely.
  • Spend extended periods outdoors in varying weather.

Department: Transportation

Location: Cottonwood Heights, UT

Compensation: $20.00 / hour

What are the core responsibilities for the role?
  • Assist survey crews with fieldwork on a Forest Service project in the High Uintas.
  • Carry and set up survey equipment while working across rugged, mountainous terrain.
  • Assist with collecting accurate field measurements and survey data.
  • Help survey crews locate, identify, and document project features in the field.
  • Learn and apply basic surveying techniques, equipment, and field procedures under the direction of experienced surveyors.

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
  • Interest in surveying, civil engineering, construction, environmental science, geography, or a related field preferred, but not required.
  • Current college or high school students, recent graduates, or individuals interested in gaining hands-on surveying experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Enjoys hiking and working outdoors.
  • Comfortable hiking several miles over rugged and uneven terrain while carrying survey equipment and supplies.
  • Able to work in mountainous and remote environments for extended periods.
  • Dependable, hardworking, and willing to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be available for approximately 2–3 months beginning at the end of August.
  • Previous surveying or field experience is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.
