Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a field survey technician to support highway surveying and related land surveying tasks. You will proficiently operate total stations, data collectors, and levels to establish elevations and control for benchmarks, ground controls, profiles, and cross sections.

Responsibilities include setting up instruments, recording data, and ensuring accuracy before transmittal to Headquarters.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and two years of related experience or approved equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Physical demands include bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Work may require outside hours and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Operate survey equipment (total station, data collector, level) to establish elevations of benchmarks, ground controls, profiles and cross sections.
• Set up and level survey instruments, record measurements and calculate alignments for horizontal/vertical curves.
• Conduct field surveys for aerial mapping, control networks and right-of-way lines; prepare data for transmittal to headquarters.
• Maintain field notes, logs and traverses; ensure survey data accuracy before submission.
• Assist with GPS-based surveys and rodman duties; ensure safety and proper line-of-sight procedures.
