Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Land Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations for civil engineering and land development projects. This role involves conducting construction layout, ALTA surveys, boundary surveys, and topographic mapping, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. You will operate and maintain Trimble GPS and robotic equipment, supervise field crews, and collaborate with survey project managers and engineers to meet project needs.
This role is ideal for someone who is a Senior Survey Technician or Assistant Crew Chief ready for a leadership role, or a current Crew Chief looking for a more entrepreneurial, hands-on environment with exposure to a broader range of projects. If you have experience in construction layout, boundary surveys, and GPS/total station operation, this role provides an opportunity to lead projects, mentor junior staff, and refine survey processes.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct construction layout, ALTA surveys, topographic, boundary, and as-built surveys.
- Be flexible to work individually or lead and supervise a field survey crew.
- Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including Trimble GPS and robotics.
- Accurately record and document survey data.
- Coordinate with survey project managers and engineers to meet survey needs.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies.
- Train and mentor junior crew members.
- Stay updated with the latest surveying technologies and methodologies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in surveying or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of land surveying experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Proficiency in using total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
- Strong understanding of survey principles and practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various project sites.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to read and interpret survey notes, maps, and construction plans.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Familiarity with GPS, total station, and other surveying instruments is a plus.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as bending, twisting, squatting, lifting, and moving objects of up to 50 pounds across various terrains.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA safety standards and regulations.
- Adherence to Illinois Department of Labor regulations and federal employment laws, including non-discrimination policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other surveying software is a plus.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal surveying regulations.
