Job Description

Purpose of Position: The Operating Room Technician performs nursing procedures in the operating room, assisting the surgical team in pre, intra, and post-operative phases of surgery.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Prepare the room and equipment based on patient’s surgical needs.
2. Ensure all equipment/instruments are available and functional; report malfunctions.
3. Assemble and organize instrumentation and supplies for surgery.
4. Assist in sterilization and preparation of instruments.
5. Open sterile packages/instruments before the procedure.
6. Scrub and set up sterile field prior to the procedure.
7. Maintain aseptic technique and adhere to OSHA regulations.
8. Perform scrub nurse skills competently.
9. Perform instrument, sponge, and sharps counts as per policy.
10. Assist in patient transportation and positioning.
11. Administer prescribed drugs and solutions.
12. Recognize and respond to emergency situations.
13. Follow policies on specimen care.
14. Participate in cost containment and waste control.
15. Maintain sterile setup until patient exit from OR.
16. Replenish supplies and check for outdates.
17. Identify personal learning needs and pursue self-development.
18. Participate in continuing education and maintain records.
19. Attend meetings and contribute to problem resolution.
20. Act as preceptor for new staff.
21. Contribute to patient care improvement.
22. Ensure a safe environment and conduct risk assessments.
23. Utilize electronic and paper medical records effectively.
24. Verify surgical details and conduct 'time out' procedures.
25. Label medications and solutions properly.
26. Check expiration dates of supplies and medications.
27. Report temperature and humidity issues in OR suites.
28. Hand off pertinent patient information appropriately.
29. Apply National Patient Safety Goals in perioperative practices.
30. Maintain supplies and demonstrate proficiency in population-specific care.
31. Maintain confidentiality and communicate professionally.
32. Collaborate effectively with staff and wear name badge.
33. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA or an equivalent recognized organization. Completion of a nationally accredited surgical technology program or military training with certification.

Special Note

Effective January 1, 2015, annual 15 hours of continuing education are required to remain qualified as a Surgical Technologist at NYC Health + Hospitals.
