Job summary

UNC Health Johnston is seeking a Surgical Technologist I to assist surgeons and RNs during invasive procedures. You will help ensure a safe operating room, proper instrument handling, and adherence to sterile technique across the Labor & Delivery unit.

This full-time, night-shift role in Clayton, NC offers exposure to high-risk obstetric cases, with strong emphasis on patient safety, teamwork, and continuous learning within UNC Health’s system.

Qualifications

• Strong communication skills and customer service orientation.
• Excellent organizational and priority setting abilities.
• Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique and operating room safety.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical skill duties in all operating room areas with standard practices.
• Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes specialized instrumentation.
• Follows aseptic technique and addresses contamination or breaks.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies.
• Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.
• Assists in handling and labeling surgical specimens.
• Plans and sets up instruments and supplies for procedures.
• Assists the surgeon, understanding anatomy and variations.
• Assists in case planning and instrument needs.
• Adapts scrubbing procedures based on patient info and communicates with team.
• Responds to surgical emergencies and follows ER plans.
• Maintains inventory for surgical supplies and equipment.
• Reports defective instruments and assists restocking rooms.
• Assists the RN during intraoperative nursing tasks.
• Operates complex equipment and troubleshoots as needed.
• Mentors trainees and serves as a preceptor when required.
