Job Summary

The Surgical Tech First Assistant works in a dual role as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and a First Assistant. This position assists surgeons and surgical teams during major surgical services and complex surgical procedures. It functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse when performing as a CST, and under the direction of a Surgeon when performing as a First Assistant.

Essential Functions

• Ensures supplies, equipment, and instrumentation are ready and functioning for procedures. Updates surgeon preference cards, pulls and sets up cases, and coordinates with surgeons on equipment needs.
• Prepares the operating room according to schedules, arranges sterile setups, wraps instruments for sterilization, performs quality control, and maintains cleanliness.
• Scrubs for cases requiring advanced knowledge of anatomy, instruments, and surgeon preferences.
• Prepares surgical teams, assists with patient positioning, prepping, and draping.
• Assists during surgery by passing supplies, holding retractors, and performing complex techniques as directed, following Texas scope of practice.
• Handles surgical specimens and communicates with pharmacy and vendors as needed.
• Stays current on surgical techniques and acts as a resource and mentor within the department.
