Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Procedure Scheduler to coordinate surgery and procedural scheduling for assigned providers. This role serves as a liaison between patients and hospital areas, ensuring smooth pre-procedural processes and accurate insurance authorizations.

The ideal candidate will have 1 year of medical office experience, strong medical terminology, excellent keyboarding, and outstanding customer service skills.

Qualifications

• High School education or equivalent; Associate Degree in Science or related field, Bachelor's preferred.
• 1 year experience in a medical office and/or coordinating referrals
• Medical terminology knowledge
• Excellent keyboarding skills
• Excellent customer service and written/oral communication
• High level of interpersonal skills
• Training or experience in medical coding and managed care insurance plans
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and perform duties independently

Responsibilities

• Schedules and coordinates procedures performed internally or externally.
• Manages pre-procedural testing, clearance, and medication holds.
• Validates insurance coverage and processes authorizations.
• Monitors daily schedules 1–2 weeks in advance and communicates conflicts.
• Communicates with admitting, pre-admit testing and surgery leadership as needed.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.
• Performs duties independently using critical thinking with minimal supervision.
• Participates in process improvement activities to enhance scheduling and authorization workflows.
• Interacts with physician offices and other departments with high service quality.
• Drops procedure blocks timely if provider will not utilize block.
