Job summary

Carle Health is seeking an experienced RN First Assist (RNFA) to support surgeons in general and specialized procedures in a fast-paced operating room. This role emphasizes independent perioperative nursing, post-operative evaluation, and collaboration with the OR team to ensure availability of trays, instrumentation, and supplies.

The RNFA will perform intraoperative tasks, monitor patient status, educate patients and families, and participate in postoperative assessments and research

Qualifications

• Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in Illinois (IDFPR)
• BLS within 30 days - American Heart Association
• CNOR certification
• College Diploma in Nursing and RNFA program certificate

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries with OR team coordination.
• Provide patient care and support, monitor vital signs, and communicate health status to family.
• Administer medications as directed and document perioperative care.
• Perform surgical tasks including hemostasis, suturing, draping, exposure, and tissue handling.
• Position patient on the operating table and prepare the field.
• Educate patient and family on operation and post‑operative care; discuss postoperative expectations.
• Conduct post‑operative assessments and monitor recovery for pain or complications.
• Review patient history and health assessments for perioperative planning.
• Monitor the surgical site for healing or infection; participate in research as needed.
• Possess ability to scrub and circulate per unit needs; manage supplies and equipment.
