Job summary

Indiana University Health System is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support operating room activities at our Bloomington facility. This full-time day shift role requires on-call coverage, including weekend shifts every six weeks and two weekday overnight call shifts weekly.

The ideal candidate will ensure equipment and instrumentation are ready, assist surgeons and ensure sterile technique, while maintaining rapid turnover of the OR for efficient case flow.

Qualifications

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
• NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist certification is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Must complete 17 continuing education units annually.
• Must complete Perioperative Services Preceptor class and/or 4 precepting eLMS modules.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist or relevant experience.
• Ability to assist in instrument/resource selection and support for advanced technology cases.
• Knowledge of surgical instrument names and functions.

Responsibilities

• Surgical Skilled Technologists provide service and support before, during, and after surgical procedures.
• Assists in ensuring the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment, supplies and instrumentation in the operating room prior to each operation.
• Provides assistance to the surgeon in the operating room as allowed by professional and legal standards.
• Assists in the turnover of the operating room after the procedure ensuring proper routing and/or processing of all specimens, equipment, instrumentation and supplies.
• Works as a member of the surgical team with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel.

This is a full time day shift role. On‑call coverage required, including two weekend shifts every six weeks spanning Friday end of shift through Monday at 7:00 AM, as well as two weekday overnight call shifts per week from end of shift through 7:00 AM.

Assists in ensuring the presence and proper arrangement of surgical equipment, supplies and instrumentation in the operating room prior to each operation. Provides assistance to the surgeon in the operating room as allowed by professional and legal standards. Assists in the turnover of the operating room after the procedure ensuring proper routing and/or processing of all specimens, equipment, instrumentation and supplies. Works as a member of the surgical team with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel.

• Requires a High School Diploma/GED.
• Requires certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist obtained from the NBSTSA.
• Requires Basic Life Support Certification.
• Requires 17 continuing education units annually.
• Requires successful completion of Perioperative Services Preceptor class and/or completion of 4 precepting eLMS modules and/or facility based preceptor training.
• Requires a minimum of 1 year experience in the Skilled Technologist role or relevant experience.
• Must be able to resource to other staff who are utilizing advanced technology in cases, including knowledge of the types of instruments utilized, what cases utilize different technologies, etc.
• Requires knowledge of name and function of surgical equipment and instrumentation.
• Requires strict adherence to policies and regulations regarding maintenance of sterile field.
• Requires completion of application and recommendations as prescribed in Advancement Process.
