Job summary

Shady Grove Medical Center is seeking an experienced Surgical First Assistant to join the operating room team. The role focuses on patient positioning, assisting with hemostasis, and preparing the OR for procedures, while ensuring safety and comfort.

The position is part-time, weekend-focused with on-call duties; requires an ABSA/NBSTSA/NSSA certification, and BLS. 16 hours per week, weekend day shifts, with competitive pay and benefits at Adventist HealthCare facilities.

Qualifications

• Formal working knowledge; equivalent to an associate’s degree; requires knowledge of a specialized field.
• Initial Certification CSFA, CSA or SA-C; NBSTSA/ABSA/NSSA certifications noted.
• Maintain mandated Certification competencies & CEUs.
• Experience as a Surgical Scrub Tech strongly preferred.
• Active American Heart Association BLS certification required (ACLS preferred; obtain in first year).

Responsibilities

• Provide visualization of the operative site by placing & securing retractors, packing with sponges or lap packs, tissue manipulation, suctioning and irrigation.
• Assist with hemostasis using clamps, ligation, cauterization, and hemostatic agents.
• Assist OR team in setting up the OR and selecting equipment, anticipate instruments and supplies.
• Position the patient for surgery, protect pressure points, ensure exposure for procedure and anesthesia access.
• Anticipate surgeon moves, close body planes, and apply wound dressings.
• Introduce self to patient and direct questions appropriately.
• Collaborate with surgical team to expedite safe surgical care.
• Transport patient to PACU with anesthesia provider; prep OR for next patient.
