Job summary

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support operating room teams. The role involves preparing suites, selecting instruments, and assisting surgeons with tissue exposure, hemostasis, and patient positioning.

Strong communication and teamwork are essential, along with adherence to sterile technique and patient safety standards. Applicants should be certified (BLS) and have a CSFA/SA-C/CSA or state certification, with a high school diploma and preferred associates

Qualifications

• Reads, writes and speaks conversational English.
• Prepares surgical suites with appropriate instruments and supplies.
• Understands surgeon preferences and anticipates needs.
• Maintains aseptic technique and patient safety.
• Assists with positioning, draping, and wound care during procedures.

Responsibilities

• Set up operating suites based on surgeon preference cards.
• Selects appropriate equipment and supplies for procedures.
• Achieves hemostasis using proper techniques.
• Assist with body planes, dressings and drainage systems.
• Provide visualization and exposure of operative sites.
• Handle instruments and equipment, anticipate surgeon needs.
• Assist with patient positioning and comfort.
• Maintain aseptic technique and monitor team performance.
• Perform instrument, sharps, and sponge counts as needed.
• Participate in time-out verifications and address discrepancies.
• Assist with medication delivery and irrigation solutions during procedures.
• Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
