Job Description
Primary responsibility involves performing specific tasks as a Surgical Assistant during surgical procedures to enable the surgeon to perform efficient and safe operations. Assists with identifying anatomy within the operative field and maintains positive customer relations. Demonstrates competency and possesses the technical skills appropriate for assigned cases, utilizing that knowledge to assist others. Performs various duties within scope of responsibility and reports to the manager of Surgical Assistants.
Responsibilities
General Duties
Clinical skills performed under direct supervision include:
Communication
Communicates pertinent information effectively to the physician, team members, and completes incident reports timely. Maintains professional rapport with all stakeholders.
Leadership
Demonstrates leadership by motivating, educating, delegating, and mentoring peers, participating in staff meetings, and supporting professional growth.
Productivity
Plans and implements patient care efficiently, manages workload, and utilizes resources responsibly to maintain fiscal responsibility.
Safety
Familiar with surgical positions and equipment, assesses patient and environment for safety risks, and implements safety measures to prevent contamination and injury. Reports any unusual events or problems promptly.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
EDUCATION: 2 years college or specialty school in surgical assisting.
EXPERIENCE: Preferred 4 years general experience, with 2 years in a specialty area.
Licenses, Registrations & Certifications
Certified by NSAA, CFA in AST, AA-C in AAPA, or CRNFA in ONA within 6 months of employment, or hold an advanced medical degree with 3 years practice in the U.S. BLS certification required. Membership and specialty certification are preferred.
