Job description

Position Purpose: Member of the peri-operative health care team, who, under the direct supervision of a surgeon, functions in the role of the Surgical Assist during surgical procedures. The Surgical Assistant does not concurrently function as the Surgical Technologist, but functions interdependently with the operating surgeon.

Working Relationships:

Position reports to: ASC Clinical Manager

Interpersonal Relationships:

As a representative of FACILITY, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct effect on the facility's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations, and set an example for the staff.

Position Requirements:

Licenses or Certifications: Successful completion of Operating Room Technician program. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course preferred.

Education and Vocational Training:

Certification as a Surgical Assistant or verification of completion of a formal Surgical Assist Program. Must provide written documentation of clinical proficiency in Surgical Assistant role by surgeon.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year experience in surgical assisting preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Performs direct patient care activities in the peri-operative setting consistent with the ASC policies and procedures.
  • Functions in the role of a Surgical Assist during operative procedures.
  • Complies with safety and infection control procedures.
  • Communicates and works cooperatively with other members of the health care team.
  • Delivers safe patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and according to surgery center policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet patient's and family's learning needs as identified in the plan of care.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse with patient discharges.
  • Demonstrates continued competence in treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.

Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.

Productivity:

  • Follows established policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
  • Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up-to-date information in accordance with established standards.
  • Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Strives to be professional, courteous, helpful, and cooperative.
  • Attends and participates in all applicable training and development workshops scheduled by the facility.
  • Maintains dress and appearance according to standards as observed by management.

  • Adheres to Standards of Business Conduct.
  • Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.

Business Relationships:

  • Ensures customer satisfaction and other performance criteria are measured and used to enhance services and performance.
  • Facilitates employee empowerment, so that the employees can deliver customer service and satisfaction.

Leadership:

  • Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up-to-date information in accordance with established standards.
  • Adheres to established surgical facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Administrator.

Follows established surgical facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, blood and body fluids that may carry infection, infectious disease, and chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects. Ability to climb, pull, push, and kneel. Ability to push a gurney with a 150 lb. patient. Maximum unassisted lift = over 100 lbs. Ability to wear lead apron and push heavy equipment.

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO POSITION:

Minimal. Must be self-directed and able to work independently.
