Job Details:
Position Purpose: Member of the peri-operative health care team, who, under the direct supervision of a surgeon, functions in the role of the Surgical Assist during surgical procedures. The Surgical Assistant does not concurrently function as the Surgical Technologist, but functions interdependently with the operating surgeon.
Working Relationships: Position reports to: ASC Clinical Manager
Interpersonal Relationships: As a representative of the facility, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct effect on the facility's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional.
Licenses or Certifications: Successful completion of Operating Room Technician program. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course preferred.
Education and Vocational Training: Certification as a Surgical Assistant or verification of completion of a formal Surgical Assist Program. Must provide written documentation of clinical proficiency in Surgical Assistant role by surgeon.
Experience: Minimum 1 year experience in surgical assisting preferred.
Follows established surgical facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
Work is indoors in climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids that may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects. Ability to climb, pull, push, and kneel. Ability to push a gurney with 150 lb. patient. Maximum unassisted lift = over 100 lbs. Ability to wear lead apron and push heavy equipment.
Minimal. Must be self-directed and able to work independently.
