Job description

Job Title: Medical Support Assistant

The incumbent serves as a Medical Support Assistant in the Primary Care and Specialty Care Integrated Clinical Community (ICC) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care, which empowers individuals to take charge of their health and well-being. As an employee operating within this model, you will work to create personalized health plans for Veterans, fostering healing relationships and environments that connect back to the Veteran's community. Major Duties

Responsibilities include providing administrative support within a patient-centered care environment, collaborating with healthcare teams, and assisting in the management of patient information and appointments.

Requirements
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA policy.
  • Experience and Education:
    • Six months of clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position; OR
    • One year of education above high school; OR
    • An equivalent combination of experience and education demonstrating the ability to perform the duties.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as described in VA Qualification Standards (applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations

One year of experience at the GS-7 level, leading or supervising MSAs or equivalent administrative patient support staff in a medical setting.

AND

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Ability to perform administrative and supervisory duties, including assigning work, evaluating performance, and recommending staff awards or advancements.
  • Effective collaboration, communication, and customer service skills to ensure quality care and compliance.
  • Ability to provide staff training, orientations, and development.
  • Skill in managing fiscal matters, forecasting resource needs, and budgeting.
  • Advanced knowledge of managing patient support staff, utilizing reference sources, decision-making, and problem resolution within complex systems.

The full performance level for this vacancy is GS-8.
