Job description

The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) in the VA Community Care (VACC) Service Line. The AMSA works collaboratively within an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. The work involves specialized administrative judgment and the flexible use of clinical flow processes related to access to care across multiple community care clinics, specialties, and resources.

Duties

The Advanced MSA screens and receives phone calls courteously and promptly, determines the nature of requests, and provides information in accordance with privacy rules established by VACC processes and HIPAA. Incumbents interpret and communicate requirements and assist in training/mentoring others. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing administrative tasks related to patient care coordination.
  • Managing appointment scheduling and patient information.

Qualifications

***KSA Recommendation - All qualifying experience must be clearly described in your application package. Demonstrate how you have gained each KSA; failure to do so may result in disqualification.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and Education:
  • Six months of clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work indicating the ability to perform the duties of the position; OR
  • One year of education above high school; OR
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education.

Certification: None required.

English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English per VA standards.

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations

Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) GS-6

Experience: One year at the GS-5 level including skills such as operating computerized programs, understanding medical terminology, scheduling appointments, working independently, and effective communication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Ability to collaborate with medical staff across disciplines.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work independently.
  • Effective communication skills in various formats.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare processes and policies related to care delivery and patient access.

The full performance level is GS-6.

Physical Requirements: Participation in a pre-employment examination or evaluation is required.
