MoDOT in Chesterfield is seeking a Materials Intern to sample and test general construction materials to ensure compliance with specifications. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program.
  • ABET-accredited program for engineering candidates.
  • GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • At least 30 credit hours completed.

Responsibilities

  • Samples and tests general construction materials (steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, cement) for specification conformance.
  • Sample and test aggregates for quality and gradation; approve/reject materials from quarries.
  • Prepare samples for bituminous trial mixes and coordinate with contractor on mix information.
  • May perform inspector-in-charge duties at plants producing bituminous mixtures to verify conformance.
  • May inspect prestressed or precast concrete and conduct special sampling for federal aid projects.
  • Maintain records of test results, product records, and reports of materials approved for projects or maintenance.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

Education

Must be enrolled in relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's program
ABET-accredited engineering program
GPA 2.0/4.0 minimum
Completed at least 30 credit hours

  • Samples and test fine and coarse aggregate production for quality and gradation specification compliance at quarries supplying materials for department projects and approves/rejects material.

  • May perform duties of inspector in charge at plants producing bituminous mixtures to determine if the material produced conforms to specifications and approves or rejects the material.
  • May perform inspections of prestressed or precast concrete and special sampling and testing of materials required on federal aid projects.
  • May maintain records of test results, product records, and reports of general materials and aggregates approved for each project or for maintenance use.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program; for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.
