MoDOT invites engineering student interns to join the Sikeston, MO team, performing materials testing and sampling under supervision. The entry salary is posted above, with a year-two rate of $23.30 per hour and year-three rate of $24.92 per hour.

The role supports inspection and testing of materials used in state highway construction and maintenance. Responsibilities include sampling steel, pipe, asphalt, and cement; coordinating with contractors on trial mixes; and maintaining accurate records

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12 credit hours); for engineering candidates, ABET-accredited.
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. transcripts show acceptance of high school/postsecondary credits.
• GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Samples and tests construction materials to determine conformity with specifications; approves/rejects material for use.
• Tests aggregates and prepares samples for bituminous mixes; coordinates trial mix information with contractor.
• Performs inspections of materials produced at plants to ensure compliance with specs; maintains test result records.

Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

• Samples and tests general construction materials such as steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, and cement to determine if materials conform to specifications and approves/rejects material for intended use.
• Samples and test fine and coarse aggregate production for quality and gradation specification compliance at quarries supplying materials for department projects and approves/rejects material.
• Prepares samples for bituminous trial mixes; coordinates with contractor on trial mix information.
• May perform duties of inspector in charge at plants producing bituminous mixtures to determine if the material produced conforms to specifications and approves or rejects the material.
• May perform inspections of prestressed or precast concrete and special sampling and testing of materials required on federal aid projects.
• May maintain records of test results, product records, and reports of general materials and aggregates approved for each project or for maintenance use.
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12 credit hours); for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited.
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
