The lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities. This role will be responsible for carrying out and enforcing aquatic policies and procedures in compliance with statutes as described by the State of Pennsylvania, the YMCA of the USA, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, lifeguard licensing agency Ellis and Associates, and YMCA insurance representatives.

What You’ll Do

• Actively scan the assigned zone of coverage every 10 seconds and get to the farthest point within another 20 seconds.
• Perform a thorough bottom scan of your zones during rotations.
• Position yourself to avoid glare, building components, or floating structures from obstructing your view.
• Guard from an elevated chair or standing/patrolling within one foot of the pool edge at all times.
• Change body position every five minutes following the “5 Minute Strategy” standards.
• Never leave the pool deck unguarded.
• Be “Rescue Ready” at all times with feet flat, rescue tube, whistle, and proper gear.
• Participate in all drills and respond as if they were real emergencies.
• Close the pool if conditions are unsafe and alert a supervisor immediately, following policies.
• Communicate professionally with members.
• Follow protocols for swim testing and marking children aged 14 and under.
• Enforce pool rules courteously and fairly.
• Maintain cleanliness and perform duties away from active guarding as needed.
• Rotate zones every 30 minutes, with breaks and no cell phone use during active guarding.
• Ensure compliance with all policies and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be 15 years or older.
• Current lifeguarding certification from Ellis & Associates or transferred certification.
• Current CPR, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications.
• Complete monthly in-service hours as required.
• Obtain and maintain all certifications within 90 days of hire.

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

Must be able to perform essential functions, including extended computer use, communication, movement, lifting up to 10 pounds, and vision requirements. Noise level is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
