Job description

At Homeless No More, we are dedicated to transforming the lives of families with children experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Through our emergency shelter (Family Shelter), transitional shelter (St. Lawrence Place), supportive services, affordable housing development, and advocacy initiatives, we provide more than just housing—we empower families to reclaim their independence and build brighter futures.

Summer Camp Counselor (full-time and part-time)

We are seeking a passionate, dynamic summer camp counselor to join our team in our summer camp program (June 1 – August 1). In this key role, you will work with the children we serve and be a part of the team that creates an enriching, safe environment for vulnerable children aged 5-12. You will be part of a fast-paced full-day environment leading outdoor activities, field trips, and other important activities that help the children grow and learn. Counselors practice trauma informed care and conscious discipline while using the Montessori method of learning - a child-centered approach that focuses on self-directed learning and individualized development around five core areas: practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language, and cultural studies. These areas are designed to foster independence, concentration, and a love of learning.

After summer camp hours are weekdays 8:00 a.m. – 6 p.m. Camp is closed on HNM holidays (Juneteenth and July 4th). If you’re excited to use your passion for children, we’d love to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities:

Activity Planning and Implementation
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate activities, games, and programs.
  • Organize and supervise group activities, sports, and crafts.
  • Encourage participation and foster a positive, inclusive environment.
Supervision and Safety
  • Supervise campers at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Know and enforce safety rules and procedures.
  • Be aware of campers' whereabouts and monitor their activities.
  • Administer first aid or seek medical assistance when needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment.
Communications & Relationship Building
  • Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and other staff members.
  • Build positive relationships with campers and create a supportive environment.
  • Provide guidance, motivation, and support to campers.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist with camp setup and cleanup.
  • Maintain camp equipment and facilities.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Document incidents and maintain accurate records.

What We’re Looking For:

We are seeking an energetic, creative, and patient individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about making a difference with at-risk children.

Experience and Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred, but high school seniors with relevant experience will be considered as well.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Relevant experience in childcare, education, or recreation.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Leadership and organizational skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to pass required certifications such as First Aid and CPR.

Specific Requirements:

  • Background check and references required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment.
