• Strong foundation in analytical methods and data analysis.
• Experience with software tools for data analysis and materials processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform microstructural characterization of novel titanium alloys.
• Support heat treatment studies of nickel and titanium alloys.
• Participate in hot working trials including forging and rolling.
• Support R&D activities involving nickel-base superalloy and titanium alloy systems.
• Apply materials science/engineering concepts to hands-on R&D projects.

2027 Research and Development/Data Science Internship – ATI Specialty Materials

Location: Monroe, NC

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2026

Target Students: Rising Juniors, Seniors, or Master’s Candidates – Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Data Science

As a Research and Development/Data Science Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting materials research and development projects. You’ll apply your materials science, engineering, or data science background to study advanced alloy systems and support the development and processing of high-performance materials.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Conducting microstructural characterization of novel titanium alloys.
• Supporting heat treatment studies of nickel and titanium alloys.
• Participating in hot working trials, including forging and rolling of nickel and titanium alloys.
• Supporting research and development activities involving nickel-base superalloy and titanium alloy systems.
• Applying materials science and engineering concepts to hands-on R&D projects and materials processing activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in:
  • Materials Science & Engineering
• Familiarity with:
  • Python, R, or MATLAB for modeling or data analysis (Data Science)
  • Metallurgical testing methods, forging/heat treat fundamentals (R&D)
  • Tools such as Excel, JMP, Minitab, ImageJ, or CAD/FEA software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Interest in process-structure-property relationships or intelligent manufacturing
