Job summary

ATI Specialty Materials in Monroe, NC is offering a 10-week Mechanical Design Engineer Internship for Summer 2027, targeting undergraduate and graduate engineering students. You will support equipment design, automation, reverse engineering, and process improvements in a manufacturing setting.

You'll apply CAD skills to real-world challenges, gain exposure to melt and ESR manufacturing operations, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related Engineering discipline.
• Basic experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk, or other platforms.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in equipment design and manufacturing processes.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams in a plant environment.

Responsibilities

• Support efforts to improve or automate portions of the chill plate removal process in Melt.
• Reverse engineer an ESR baseplate to support equipment design and engineering activities.
• Develop improvements to the safety of loading and unloading the Tank 3 mold cart into the tunnel.
• Provide general Monroe Operations project support based on departmental needs.
• Use CAD and engineering principles to support equipment improvements, modifications, and design projects.
• Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to identify problems and develop practical solutions.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern, you’ll support projects that improve manufacturing equipment, processes, and safety across ATI’s Monroe operations. You’ll apply your engineering and CAD skills to real-world challenges involving equipment design, automation, reverse engineering, and process improvement.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Support efforts to improve or automate portions of the chill plate removal process in Melt.
