Job summary

Richard Milburn Academy seeks a Substitute Teacher for the 2026/2027 School Year to ensure continuity of instruction in the absence of the regular teacher. The substitute will participate in school-wide activities as needed and report to administration.

The position requires presenting prepared lesson plans, maintaining classroom routines, and supporting positive student progress. The candidate should have strong communication with parents and staff and a commitment to creating a safe learning

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, Associate Degree or higher.
• Ability to work politely with parents, students, and staff.
• Experience with at-risk students preferred.
• Ability to handle conflict effectively.
• Knowledge related to educator's area of specialization.

Responsibilities

• Reports to designated staff on arrival at the school site.
• Reviews plans and schedules to be followed during the day.
• Maintains established routines and classroom procedures.
• Takes instruction to teach lessons per the substitute plan.
• Consults with Principal before initiating new procedures.
• Oversees student behavior in assigned classes.
• Reports day’s activities at day’s end.
• Follows policies and procedures applicable to regular teachers.
• Assumes other tasks as assigned by the Principal.

JOB PURPOSE:

To enable each student to pursue his/her education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of his/her regular teacher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reports in a timely manner to the designated administrative office and staff upon arrival the school site
• Reviews all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day as provided by appropriate supervisor
• Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and the classroom to which assigned
• Teaches the lesson(s) outlined and described in the substitute teacher's plan as prepared by the absent teacher or Principal
• Consults as appropriate with the Principal or other appropriate supervisor before initiating any teaching or other procedures not previously specified in the substitute teacher plan
• Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in assigned classes and in any other supervisory assignments
• Reports on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day per the routines established by the school
• Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates
• Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

• A High School Diploma, Associate Degree or higher or as required by local regulation from an accredited college or university
• A proven ability to work in a polite and friendly manner with a variety of constituencies including parents, students, and staff
• Prior experience or formal training in working with "at-risk" students preferred
• Experience in effectively handling conflict
• Demonstrates knowledge within the area of specialization to a degree consistent with the educator's professional preparation
