Job summary

Richard Milburn Academy seeks a Substitute Teacher for the 2026/2027 school year. The substitute will support student learning in the absence of the regular teacher and follow lesson plans provided by the administrator.

Requirements include a high school diploma or higher and the ability to work courteously with parents, students, and staff. Prior experience with at-risk students is preferred, and the role involves supervising students and maintaining classroom routines.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or higher from an accredited college or university.
• Ability to work politely and friendly with parents, students, and staff.
• Prior experience with at-risk students is preferred.
• Experience handling conflict effectively.
• Demonstrates knowledge within the area of specialization per educator preparation.

Responsibilities

• Report to designated administrator on arrival at the school site.
• Review plans and schedules for the teaching day as provided by supervisor.
• Maintain established routines and procedures of the school and classroom.
• Teach the lesson(s) outlined in the substitute teacher’s plan.
• Consult with Principal before initiating any unplanned procedures.
• Oversee student behavior in assigned classes and supervision duties.
• Report day’s activities at day’s end per school routines.
• Follow school policies and procedures applicable to regular teachers.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

JOB PURPOSE:

To enable each student to pursue his/her education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of his/her regular teacher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

• Reports in a timely manner to the designated administrative office and staff upon arrival the school site
• Reviews all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day as provided by appropriate supervisor
• Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and the classroom to which assigned
• Teaches the lesson (s) outlined and described in the substitute teacher’s plan as prepared by the absent teacher or Principal
• Consults as appropriate with the Principal or other appropriate supervisor before initiating any teaching or other procedures not previously specified in the substitute teacher plan
• Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in assigned classes and in any other supervisory assignments
• Reports on the day’s activities at the conclusion of each teaching day per the routines established by the school
• Follows all policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates
• Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A High School Diploma, Associate Degree or higher or as required by local regulation from an accredited college or university
• A proven ability to work in a polite and friendly manner with a variety of constituencies including parents, students, and staff
• Prior experience or formal training in working with “at-risk” students preferred
• Experience in effectively handling conflict
• Demonstrates knowledge within the area of specialization to a degree consistent with the educator’s professional preparation
