Job summary

ReNEW Schools is seeking a substitute School Nurse to provide daily health services for students across its campuses in Indiana. The role supports the school health program, maintains health records, administers medications, and coordinates with administrators, physicians, and families to ensure student well-being.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a professional image.
• Maintain proper health supplies and equipment in each building to render exemplary service to students.
• Collaborate with school administration and physician in planning and organizing the school health program.
• Implement, conduct, and complete reports including follow-up on referrals for all screening programs mandated by Indiana Law.
• Implement health programs approved by the Board of School Trustees.
• Assess, identify, and monitor health needs of students.
• Initiate and maintain accurate student health records, including immunization records, medication administration records, individual student health care plans
• Serve as a liaison between school, home and the community.
• Plan in cooperation with school personnel and community resources to establish school health policies which include first-aid/emergency care, prevention, and control of communicable disease
• Collaborate closely with administrators, school counselors, teachers, parents, and other staff regarding the health needs of the general school population and those students with identified health conditions
• Cooperate with community organizations in coordinating services with those provided in the school
• Provide faculty/staff orientation and in-service for identifying and observing students for signs of health problems
• Coordinate and supervise training of volunteers and/or health aides in screening techniques, first-aid and clerical responsibilities
• Serve as a resource person in matters pertaining to health curriculum planning
• Participate in school health councils as well as provide consultation with other school and community groups concerned with health
• Assess and evaluate professional skills on an ongoing basis
• Report suspected child abuse to the building administrator and the Child Protection Services
• Dispense and monitor medication
• Administer first aid and handle emergencies. Procedures involving injuries:
• Determine whether medical attention is required
• Contact parents
• Determine when emergency transportation is needed
• Aide in completion of accident reports
• Follow-up with staff/faculty for their witnessed documentation (they are to complete before they sign)
• Keep copy and submit copy to principal
• Maintain file of student/adult accidents
• Assist with student attendance problems at the request of the principal only
• Appraise and evaluate the school health services and the health education programs annually and in writing to the Superintendent. This appraisal and evaluation shall be submitted by May of each school year
• Identify and provide student data to assist in the development of a nurse’s schedule to best meet the needs of the student population of each school in the corporation
• Collaborate with the special education department/school psychologist regarding identification and implementation of health related concerns in Individualized Education Plans
• Supervise and train school personnel, designated by the building principals (approved by the nurse) who have been assigned the responsibility for assisting students with health needs
• Perform other duties as required by the Superintendent
