• Communicate with parents and staff during emergencies or when a student needs to go home.
• Maintain clinic safety and perform other health-related duties as needed.

Summary of Basic Functions & Responsibilities

Under the supervision and direction of the Building Principals and/or Superintendent, the Substitute School Nurse serves as the primary health professional for the school community. In accordance with Indiana State Law and Department of Education guidelines, the core mission is to minimize health-related barriers to learning and promote a safe, healthy environment for all students and staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Applicants for the Indiana Substitute School Nurse position may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. • Provide professional nursing care and first aid for students and staff in the event of injury or acute illness;
• Supervise the administration of medication and specialized medical treatments in accordance with Indiana state laws and school board policy;
• Document any care that is given during the day and maintain an accurate and confidential paper health record
• Act as a first responder for all medical emergencies on school grounds;
• Serve as a Mandated Reporter for suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by Indiana law;
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-supplied school clinic while adhering to OSHA and Universal Precautions standards;
• Demonstrate the ability to handle sensitive medical information with strict confidentiality and professionalism;
• Communicate effectively with parents and staff in the event of an emergency or if a student needs to be sent home
• Maintain control and safety in the clinic environment; and
• Perform other health-related duties as needed

Qualifications

Required

• Licensed LPN or RN (must provide documentation)
• Must be able to pass an expanded criminal history check and Department of Child Services check.

Prefered

• Familiarity with Indiana school health laws and the Indiana CHIRP (Children and Hoosiers Immunization Registry Program) system is highly preferred.
