Job summary

Topeka Public Schools is seeking on-call substitute food service workers to support nutrition services when regular staff are absent. You will help prepare, serve, and maintain cafeteria operations across locations. This is a part-time role with no guaranteed hours, requiring basic food safety awareness and the ability to lift 30 pounds.

Responsibilities include food preparation, serving at the line, stocking, temperatures checks, cleaning, and other duties as assigned to ensure smooth service.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is desirable.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Knowledge of food safety basics.
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds.
  • Ability to stand up to 6 hours.
  • Knowledge of portion sizes.
  • Ability to work well with others.

Responsibilities

  • Serve food to the cafeteria line and prepare items.
  • Prepare food at the kitchen and set up steam tables.
  • Clean and sanitize all food service areas and equipment.
  • Take and document temperatures of foods.
  • Unload and put away stock.
  • Wash dishes as needed.
  • Assist in overall operations at different kitchen locations as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

SUBSTITUTE POSTIONS ARE ON CALL AS NEEDED. MAY NOT WORK EVERY DAY

Reports To: Assigned School's Food Service Manager

Position Purpose: To effectively maintain overall operations of the Food Service Program while the permanent employee is absent.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED is desirable

  • Demonstrate knowledge of food safety basics
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
  • Ability to stand up to 6 hours
  • Knowledge of portions sizes
  • Ability to work well with others
Duties and Responsibilities

To serve food to a cafeteria line, prepare food in a kitchen, and perform cleaning activities. May assist in the effective overall operations of the Food and Nutrition Services Program at different kitchen locations as needed.

  • Preparation of food items

  • Serve food
