Westerly Public Schools (RI) District is seeking a Substitute Building Administrator to serve as the temporary instructional and operational leader of a designated school during the absence of the Principal or Assistant Principal. The role prioritizes equity and ensures that every student gets what every student needs.

The candidate should have 3–5 years of certified PK–12 teaching or pupil personnel service experience, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and RI certification eligibility.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of successful, certified PK–12 teaching experience or pupil personnel service experience.
  • Leadership Track Record: Demonstrated experience in school leadership roles (e.g., Department Head, Instructional Coach, Dean, Assistant Principal, or previous Principal experience).
  • Familiarity with state‑mandated frameworks, including RIDE's Educator Evaluation System, Multi‑Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), and Rhode Island Regulations for Special Education.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain daily operational continuity across the school building, ensuring a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for building emergencies, safety drills, and immediate operational decisions while maintaining clear, two-way communication among faculty, staff, students, and central administration.
  • Maintains visible presence in hallways and classrooms to support teachers and sustain instructional continuity.
  • Upholds student conduct standards and manages discipline using restorative practices, aligning with WPS policies on equity, anti-bullying, and inclusion.
  • Collaborates with Central Administration, Pupil Personnel Services, and district leaders regarding student needs, curriculum issues, and operational decisions during the absence.
  • Coordinates with the Superintendent or district instructional leaders on any pressing curriculum matters that arise during the absence.
  • Maintains positive student morale and reinforces a welcoming school culture.
  • Serves as the primary administrative point of contact for parents, guardians, and parent‑teacher organizations during the administrative coverage period.
  • The Superintendent may assign other related duties.

Job Summary: The Substitute Building Administrator serves as the temporary instructional and operational leader of a designated school building during the absence of the Principal or Assistant Principal.     • Hold (or be eligible for) a valid Rhode Island Building Level Administrator Certificate (PK–12, Elementary, or Secondary).
