Job summary

WSP USA seeks an experienced Substation Structural Engineer for our Billings, MT office, with consideration for multiple locations including Denver, CO and Boise, ID. You will provide technical guidance for planning, analysis, design, and delivery of structural solutions for electrical substations, coordinating with electrical, civil, and geotechnical teams.

Ideal candidates have a BS in Structural/Civil Engineering, 3–5 years’ experience, and an EIT.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
• 3 to 5 years of relevant post‑education experience in structural engineering, including design experience for substation structures and foundations.
• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Knowledge of structural engineering principles, including steel and concrete design, soil mechanics, and foundation design.
• Familiarity with building codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, etc.).
• Experience with structural analysis or finite element modeling software (RISA‑3D, STAAD Pro, or similar).

Responsibilities

• Perform professional structural engineering work supporting electrical substation projects, including steel structures, rigid bus support design, and reinforced concrete foundations.
• Prepare structural calculations, design criteria, and calculation packages to satisfy client standards and project requirements.
• Develop construction specifications (steel and concrete), cost estimates, and technical inputs for proposals and project schedules.
• Produce/review structural drawings and deliverables, including fabrication‑ready documentation as required by project scope.
• Coordinate with cross‑functional disciplines to support integrated substation design solutions.
• Utilize structural analysis and finite element modeling tools to size structural systems and foundations.
• Maintain QA/QC of structural deliverables prior to submission.
• Support Project Managers with reporting needs and technical coordination.
• Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and support during construction.
• Mentor junior team members through technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
