Job summary

WSP is seeking an experienced Substation Structural Engineer for our Billings, MT office with consideration for Denver, CO; Boise, ID; Hailey, ID; Overland Park, KS. You will deliver structural solutions for substation projects, including steel, concrete foundations, and rigid bus supports, ensuring quality and code compliance.

You will prepare calculations, drawings, and specifications, coordinate with electrical and civil teams, and mentor junior staff while contributing to project schedules

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 3–5 years of post-education structural engineering experience.
• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices including steel and concrete design.
• Familiarity with building codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE).
• Experience with structural analysis/finite element tools (RISA-3D, STAAD Pro).
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Proficiency with technical writing, spreadsheets, and engineering software.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional structural engineering work for electrical substation projects (steel structures, rigid bus supports, foundations).
• Prepare calculations, design criteria, and calculation packages to meet client standards and codes.
• Develop construction specifications and cost estimates for proposals and schedules.
• Produce and review structural drawings and fabrication-ready documentation.
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, geotechnical, and construction teams.
• Use structural analysis tools to size systems and foundations.
• Conduct QA/QC reviews of deliverables before submission.
• Support Project Managers with reporting and coordination.
• Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and assist in construction phase.
