Job summary

Southern Company Services in the Atlanta Metro area seeks a Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer to design protective relay and control schemes using microprocessor-based relay systems for greenfield and brownfield substations.

The role includes specifying and ordering materials, transmitting drawing packages, and coordinating with multiple departments, vendors, and committees while supporting storm restoration and project execution.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree (Electrical preferred) with 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Engineering Technology degree (Electrical preferred) with 5+ years relevant experience.
• 4-year degree (non-engineering) with 8+ years relevant experience.
• Associate degree with 15+ years relevant design experience.
• No degree with 18+ years relevant design or utility experience.

Responsibilities

• Make safety the top priority with a safety-first mentality.
• Enforce QA guidelines for high-quality substation design packages.
• Provide guidance on Southern Company design standards, procedures, and processes.
• Design protective relay and control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems.
• Assist in specification and ordering of material for substation design packages; transmit drawing packages and specifications.
• Coordinate and communicate with other Substation Design departments.
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve issues.
• Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance.
• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-engineering meetings, pre-construction meetings, and post-job evaluation meetings; some overnight travel.
