Job summary

Southern Company is seeking a Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer in the Metro Atlanta area (Forest Park, GA) to design protective relay and control schemes using microprocessor-based relays for green and brown field projects. You will specify and order material for substation design packages and transmit drawing packages using the Transmission Engineering transmittal program.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree with 5+ years relevant experience.
• AutoCAD Electrical and Autodesk Suite experience preferred.
• Substation design experience in utility environment preferred.
• Experience with protection and control schemes is a strong plus.
• Knowledge of document management and estimating systems helpful.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize safety and enforce a Safety First culture in design work.
• Ensure QA guidelines for high-quality substation design packages using CAD.
• Provide guidance on Southern Company design standards and processes.
• Design protective relay and control schemes using microprocessor relays.
• Specify and order material for substation design packages (stock, shop, non-stock).
• Transmit drawing packages and specs via Transmission Engineering transmittal program.
• Coordinate with other departments and communicate with vendors and committees.
• Support Substation Construction, Field Services, PM and Maintenance teams.
• Perform site visits, pre-meetings, and post-job evaluations; some overnight travel.
• Support design criteria and standardization efforts; manage multiple tasks.
