Job summary

HDR Engineering is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to join our Power Delivery team in Rapid City, South Dakota. The role focuses on physical substation, protection, and control engineering for 12kV through 500kV projects, with responsibilities across yard layouts, grounding, and panel wiring.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in engineering, a PE license, and an ability to work independently while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required.
PE license is required.
3+ years of experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector is preferred.
Proficiency with Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).

Responsibilities

Understand physical substation design including yard layouts and grounding.
Understand protection and control design and panel wiring.
Prepare calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, etc.).
Prepare equipment specifications for procurement or FAT.
Coordinate design activities with Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission teams.
Communicate and coordinate project activities with management and clients.
Mentor and supervise junior staff.
Assist in developing scopes, schedules, and budgets.
