Job summary

NEI Electric Power Engineering is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to lead portions of multidisciplinary substation projects, performing design and analysis across physical and protection & control disciplines. The role requires strong technical leadership, QA/QC oversight, and collaboration with designers to deliver high-quality NEI-grade results in a dynamic Colorado setting.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institute.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • FE/PE licensure preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Lead portions of multi-disciplinary substation projects and perform design work.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews and mentor junior engineers.
  • Develop go-bys, templates, and technical standards.
  • Review contractor/vendor submittals and prepare cost estimates.

Substation Project EngineerAbout the PositionAs a Substation Project Engineer, you will lead portions of multi-disciplinary substation projects while performing engineering design and analysis across both physical and protection & control disciplines. You will contribute technical expertise, support project execution, perform QA/QC reviews, and collaborate with designers and engineers to ensure high-quality deliverables aligned with NEI standards.Salary Range: $110,000 - $165,000 / yearThe salary range above is based upon the Denver, Colorado labor market.This opportunity is available to both local / in-office (Lakewood, CO) and full-time remote candidates.Technical ResponsibilitiesYou will perform engineering design, analysis, and review across an integrated set of substation deliverables, including;Substation general arrangements, elevations, site layouts, equipment layouts, and structure placement.Grounding plans, details, and grounding analysis.Conduit and raceway routing, cable trench layouts, and AC/DC station service layoutsOne-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, protection & control schematics, and wiring diagrams.Relay panel layouts, control building equipment layoutsCable schedules, I/O lists, device lists, and bills of material.Engineering calculations including bus and conductor sizing, duty checks, voltage drop, and station service loading.Equipment specification development and vendor submittal reviews.Ensuring compliance with NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and client-specific standards.Use of AutoCAD, 3D modeling tools, and industry-standard engineering software.Project & Leadership ResponsibilitiesManage deliverables and deadlines to ensure they are submitted on time for both internal QA/QC deadlines and external deadlines to the client.Perform preliminary QA/QC review of designer and engineer work for overall quality, accuracy, and conformance to client specifications and required codes.Provide day-to-day technical leadership for scope, budget, schedule, and design execution.Mentor junior engineers and designers in substation design practices.Develop go-bys, templates, and technical standards.Assist in the enforcement of technical standards across assigned projects.Prepare a variety of documents and reports associated with projects including cost estimates, budget reports, and proposals for complex projects.Work closely with Directors and Team Leads on complex projects.Review contractor and vendor submittals for technical compliance.Attend conferences, training workshops, seminars, undergraduate, and graduate classes as appropriate for advancement and as required to maintain quality of work.Complete safety training and follow safety rules and guidelines.Must HaveEducation: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institute.Experience: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.Licensure: FE/PE preferred.Possesses effective written and oral communications skillsStrong technical writing and communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor othersAuthorization to work in the U.S. on a full-time basisWorking ConditionsWork Environment:Work is performed in an office setting, and some field work may be requiredTravel:Typical: 15 – 25%Physical Activities:Must be able to lift 25lbs.About NEI Electric Power EngineeringServing Others.
