Job summary

Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group (QISG) seeks a Design Engineer - Substation to perform substation design assignments, including physical layout and protection & control systems, while ensuring safety and construction standard compliance. Reports to a Supervising Engineer within a substation design team supporting multiple projects.

Responsibilities include creating yard layouts, protection schematics, BOMs, and design drawings; applying NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards; and

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Passing the FE exam is highly desirable; required for the Design Engineer 4 band.
• Curiosity for and willingness to learn about major substation components; basic knowledge is a plus; prior design/construction exp is desirable.
• No experience required in the electric utility industry for entry level positions; more experience could lead to higher band.
• Word processing, spreadsheet, and email software proficiency.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; working in a team environment; communicating effectively with co-workers.
• Able to deal with ambiguity and work independently, manage multiple tasks and priorities in a complex environment.

Responsibilities

• Design physical substation components and yard layouts including grounding and protection systems.
• Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable lists and panel layouts.
• Create design drawings, calculations, and BOMs from engineering documents for planning and construction.
• Conduct engineering calculations such as voltage drop, cable pulling, flicker and grounding analyses.
• Ensure adherence to standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI) across projects.
• Perform quality reviews to identify inaccuracies or non-conformities and propose fixes.
• Collaborate with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications.
• Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations.
• Flag potential project issues and propose solutions to stakeholders.
• Travel out of town up to 10–25% as required by projects.
