Job Description

Student Research Lab Assistant Student Worker will perform research in the Lab under the direction of the faculty supervisor/Principal Investigator for the lab, Dr. Laurence Angel, using NSF research grant funds. Research will include developing ion mobility - mass spectrometry techniques and analysis, density functional theory modeling, and preparation of conference presentations and research articles. Duties will include conducting instrumental and theoretical analyses in Dr. Angel’s research group. Student worker will spend time in the lab using scientific instrumentation and computer software and will track research progress in lab notebook. Results will be used for scientific journal article publications.

Only undergraduates with a strong interest in this area of Chemistry research and knowledge of stated specific lab techniques may apply. Failure to spend adequate time in the lab on research or inability to operate the scientific instruments or software may result in termination. This job will end when the grant expires. All positions are security-sensitive. Student Worker Roles & Hours

Student worker positions are part-time roles available throughout the university in a variety of departments and offices. These roles help students gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. May work up to 19 hours per week while classes are in session; May work full-time during breaks and summer if enrolled for the upcoming fall; Must not work during scheduled class times; Open to all actively enrolled students regardless of financial aid status; Students do not need to be enrolled during summer if they plan to return in the fall; Work-study positions are need-based jobs funded through federal or state financial aid programs and allow students to earn money to help pay for educational expenses; Must be awarded federal or state work-study through Financial Aid; May work up to 19 hours per week during the semester; May work full-time during breaks and summer if returning in the fall; Must not work during scheduled class times; Positions are limited to the amount awarded and must follow program guidelines.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships offer opportunities to teach, conduct research, or assist in academic departments while continuing your graduate education. To qualify, students must:

  • Be fully admitted to a graduate program (not provisional or non-degree)
  • Be in good standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be enrolled in courses each term of the assistantship
  • Meet specific credit hour and subject requirements for teaching or lab roles
  • Non-native English speakers must demonstrate language proficiency
  • Research assistants must complete Responsible Conduct in Research training
  • Work up to 20 hours per week, depending on the appointment
  • May have teaching or research assignments, or provide administrative support
