Job Description

Chemistry (GAT) Graduate Teaching Assistant Job description Graduate student teaching positions will assist Faculty in teaching lab and lecture classes, grading homework, exams, and papers or reports. Masters students with a Chemistry academic or lab experience background are eligible for this position. They will also assist and supervise students in the laboratory learning environment and monitor and supervise proper use of PPE in lab classes. May be required to assist with virtual labs and utilize the online learning management system D2L Brightspace. Workers will assist faculty in grading associated with lecture class exams and homework and proctor exams and make-up exams. Knowledge and training in chemistry lab safety is necessary and demonstrable knowledge of working with chemicals is required. Students may assist in the preparation of chemicals used in student labs and may work the stockroom to assist classes with equipment and supplies. Keeping weekly office hours to assist students is required. All assignments will be 4.5 or 9 month terms, with re-hire eligibility evaluated at the end of every term. Failure to perform duties may result in early termination. All positions are security-sensitive. Student worker positions are part-time roles available throughout the university in a variety of departments and offices. These roles help students gain hands‑on experience in a professional setting. May work up to 19 hours per week while classes are in session May work full‑time during breaks and summer if enrolled for the upcoming fall Must not work during scheduled class times Open to all actively enrolled students regardless of financial aid status Students do not need to be enrolled during summer if they plan to return in the fall Work‑study positions are need‑based jobs funded through federal or state financial aid programs and allow students to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. Must be awarded federal or state work‑study through Financial Aid May work up to 19 hours per week during the semester May work full‑time during breaks and summer if returning in the fall Must not work during scheduled class times Positions are limited to the amount awarded and must follow program guidelines.

Graduate assistantships offer opportunities to teach, conduct research, or assist in academic departments while continuing your graduate education.

To qualify, students must:

  • Be fully admitted to a graduate program (not provisional or non‑degree)
  • Be in good standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be enrolled in courses each term of the assistantship
  • Meet specific credit hour and subject requirements for teaching or lab roles
  • Non‑native English speakers must demonstrate language proficiency
  • Research assistants must complete Responsible Conduct in Research training
  • Work up to 20 hours per week, depending on the appointment
  • May have teaching or research assignments, or provide administrative support
