Job summary

University of Michigan seeks a Student Affairs Counselor & Advisor for the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE). The role provides holistic academic counseling, developmental guidance, and non-evaluative support to promote medical student academic success, resilience, and wellbeing.

You will lead CQI initiatives and collaborate across OMSE units to align with institutional goals. The position reports to the Director of Student Affairs and will work closely with the Assistant Dean of

Qualifications

• MA in Counseling, Advising or a related field is required.
• Four or more years of experience in post-secondary advising and/or counseling.
• Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proven ability to manage sensitive and complex student situations with discretion, empathy, and confidentiality.
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills, including working knowledge of relevant programs and software.
• Knowledge of mandatory reporting and relevant civil rights guidelines desired.

Responsibilities

• Provide holistic academic counseling to promote medical student academic success, resilience, and wellbeing.
• Lead CQI initiatives and analyze student outcome data across OMSE units.
• Advise on curriculum progression, residency preparation, and key transitions.
• Coordinate with OMSE units and campus partners to navigate systems and resources.
• Maintain ethical practice, confidentiality, and clear role boundaries.
• Support leaves of absence, schedule planning, and transitions.
