Essential functions (job duties):

The University Counselor III position will be responsible forproviding academic and personal counseling services forapproximately 200 medical students from matriculation throughgraduation. This position reports to the Associate Dean of StudentAffairs and Career Development.

Responsible for the daily provision of academic and personalcounseling services for a minimum case assignment of 200 medicalstudents from matriculation through graduation.

Work with students individually and in groups in various activitiesand programs focused on emotional health, academic success,professional development and career advising on a dailybasis.

Assist in the development, innovation, implementation andevaluation of health and wellness programming which meet thechanging needs of medical students in a rapidly developingcurriculum.

Represent the Office of Student Affairs and Career Development onvarious School of Medicine and University committees andfunctions.

Participate in the regional and national activities of theAAMC.

Qualifications:

Minimum Master’s degree required in counseling and guidance,student personnel, social work and/or psychology. Doctorate Degreepreferred.

Preferred qualifications:

Five to Eight years of experience in working with students. Medicalstudent experience preferred. Ability to accommodate a high volumeof students while individually addressing a wide variety ofchallenging academic and personal situations. Excellentproblem-solving skills required. Commitment to learning theorganizational and curricular structure of the comprehensiveundergraduate medical education program. Provide direct support tothe developing leadership initiatives in Student Affairs ( careerAdvising, Health and Wellness, and Mentoring) Develop and Implementprogramming to address the Health and Wellness of the student body.Adaptable to rapid organizational and curricular change. Ability tohandle conflict resolution and crisis, emotional and psychologicalneeds of the young adult medical student. Knowledgeable aboutmental health, human services referral agencies in the tri-countyarea. Possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills.Responsive and available to the needs of others. Work cooperativelyand collaboratively in a team approach. Must be flexible, creativeand have the ability to remain objective. Dedicated toorganizational excellence. General knowledge and understanding ofstudent policies and procedures and administrative structure.Research skills/past track record of scholarly activity highlydesirable
