Job summary

Tidewater Community College is seeking an Academic Advisor for the Virginia Beach location. The role supports students’ educational, career, and personal goals using campus and community resources.

The position is part-time, 29 hours per week, with a schedule Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm, and occasional evenings/weekends. AHP considerations may apply per Virginia guidelines.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to interact and advise first year students of diverse backgrounds and needs in a higher education setting.
• Demonstrated ability to advise individuals in an educational setting with circumstances that may hinder academic success.
• Demonstrated understanding and experience in intrusive advising practices.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with student retention strategies and initiatives.
• Demonstrated understanding of student assessment, education and career planning, registration, and retention principles and practices.
• Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, analyze, and manage data.
• Demonstrated ability to promote collaboration and teamwork in a student-centered environment.
• Experience working as an academic advisor.

Responsibilities

• To aid students in achieving educational, career, and personal goals through the use of institutional and community resources.
• Assist students in identifying appropriate academic and career goals and strategies.
• Independently analyze student issues to provide coaching, mentoring, and advisement; track and evaluate progress.
• Work with individuals and groups to assess educational status and interests, guiding persistence and retention.
