Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a seasoned student services professional to provide full-range advising for biology students and related populations. The role includes day-to-day advising, workshops, onboarding, and interdepartmental collaboration to support student success.

Responsibilities include planning large events, guiding student progression, advising on course requirements, and serving as a liaison to campus offices. Strong communication and multicultural skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and University policies.
• Solid verbal and written communication skills with diverse groups.
• Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people in crisis.
• Multicultural competencies and ability to work with diverse populations.
• Ability to identify problems and exercise sound judgment independently.
• Strong negotiation, problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Understanding of University rules and regulations and policy interpretation.
• Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and events.

Responsibilities

• Independent coordination of student support and advising tasks for undergraduates.
• Develop and implement workshops, orientations, information sessions and special events.
• Assist with hiring/onboarding of new advisors and provide ongoing training.
• Represent the School on campus work groups and committees; collaborate with campus units.
• Interpret policies to students, faculty and staff and process degree progression requests.
• Collaborate with Career Center and other offices for student development opportunities.
• Plan and execute School-wide academic advising events and outreach efforts.
• Lead annual high-profile events like career conferences and showcases.
• Provide proactive advising for at-risk students and coordinate intervention strategies.
• Analyze student needs and contribute to program improvements and policy updates.
