Job summary

South University seeks an on-site Academic Counselor to provide student-centered academic advising throughout the student lifecycle, guiding course scheduling, information requests, and interventions. You will collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, Faculty, Program Directors and Support Services to advocate for students and improve retention to graduation.

You will support new and continuing students, manage advisement for progression, monitor progress, and help students navigate policies

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
• Academic advising or counseling experience preferred.
• Customer service experience preferred.
• Solid computer skills with MS Office and exposure to CRM/SIS systems (Campus Vue/Campus Nexus preferred).
• Excellent written and verbal communication; strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized proactive advising to all assigned students.
• Drive persistence and success through orientation and scheduling.
• Develop course schedules for diverse student groups and align with curriculum.
• Maintain direct contact with students via phone, text and email within timeframes.
• Monitor attendance, grades, progress and finances; develop success plans for at‑risk students.
• Explain policies from the University Catalog and Handbooks; guide students on academic procedures.
• Assist new students with acclimation and explain enrollment processes and graduation paths.
• Support reinstatement and progression to graduation; develop interventions as needed.
• Utilize SIS/LMS and databases; ensure FERPA compliance.
• Participate in training and development; perform other duties as assigned.
