Job summary

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking a Student Advising Specialist to support Eastern University students as the primary point of contact for academic planning and advising resources.

You will work closely with the Director of Academic Advising, provide front-line support, assist with registration language, and help manage advising materials and events. This is a part-time, on-campus role with 5–15 weekly hours.

Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled student in good academic standing (minimum 3.0 GPA preferred).
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills with professional phone manners.
  • Strong time management and the ability to balance course schedule with work.
  • Comfort using Google Workspace applications (Docs, Sheets, Calendar).

Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line, in-person, phone, and email support for students and direct them to the right advisor or resource.
  • Assist with basic advising questions, degree requirements, and registration terminology.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in line with FERPA.
  • Help keep the advising office organized and support campus events and training.

If you enjoy academicplanning and guiding others through their educational pathways, weinvite you to apply for the Student Advising Specialist position.This proactive role serves as a primary point of contact and areliable support system for students navigating their collegeexperience.

Working closely with the Director of Academic Advising, you will bethe go-to student specialist for a variety of critical tasks. Thisrole offers hands-on experience in higher education administration,professional communication, and academic support. This positionpays $12 per hour to start.

Position Responsibilities
  • Front-Line Support: Be the welcoming first contact(in-person, phone, email) for students with general questions.You'll expertly direct them to the right advisor, department, orcampus resource.
  • Peer Advising: Help new/returning students understandbasic degree requirements and registration language (drop,withdraw, incompletes etc.) navigate academic policies, and findthe resources they need to thrive (like tutoring, counseling, ordisability support). Attend drop in hours to assist students withbasic advising questions.
  • Confidentiality: Learn and maintain strictconfidentiality with student records (we'll provide training onFERPA-Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).
  • Office Management: Help keep the advising office runningsmoothly! This includes managing office supplies and organizingstudent advising files and resources.
  • Service Hours: Prepare essential materials for retentionand first year experience events hosted by the Center for AcademicPlanning and Empowerment (CAPE); manage check in process andattendance for service hours events hosted by First YearProgramming.
  • Teaching Assistant: If your schedule allows, serve as ateaching assistant for first year courses (i.e. INST 100, INST 140,INST 150, INST 151) where there is need.
Qualifications
Must-Haves (Required)
  • Current Student: Must be a currently enrolled student ingood academic standing (a minimum 3.0 GPA is preferred).
  • Communication: Excellent speaking and writing skills,professional phone manners, and a genuinely friendly and welcomingpresence.
  • Organization: Strong attention to detail, excellent timemanagement, punctuality, and planning skills (especially when itcomes to your own course schedule) and comfort using GoogleWorkspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar).
  • Availability: Must be able to commit to a consistentweekly schedule ranging from 5-15 hours of work. The main officeisin Centennial Hall (elevator accessible), but other events may takeplace in buildings such as Walton, Warner Library, andMcInnis.
Great-to-Haves (Preferred)
  • Academic Knowledge: Already familiar with key campusresources (like CAPS, ARC, ODA) and student tools (like MyEasternfor degree evaluation and the registration process).
  • Experience: Previous experience in a tutoring, studentleadership, customer service, or office setting is a bigplus!
  • Proactivity: You're a self-starter who can takeinitiative, work independently, and troubleshoot basic academicquestions, and knows how to ask for help when you are lost!
