Sovah Health - Danville is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for a PRN, variable schedule role in Danville, VA. This paid externship offers hands-on experience across acute and specialty areas while you complete nursing coursework.

As a Student Nurse Extern I, you’ll work with the patient care team, perform supervised patient care, document care, and monitor patient status to support RN leadership. A strong learning focus and professional development are emphasized.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (or current student in nursing program).
• 3rd year nursing student or higher required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association required.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the patient care team.
• Performs direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
• Documents patient care provided accurately.
• Monitors and communicates patient condition to the supervising RN.
• Maintains professional relationships with patients, families and staff.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living and mobility.
• Coordinates patient care with other disciplines as needed.
• Assesses learning needs of patient and family and provides education.

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE 1) Program provides nursing students with practical work experiences to facilitate their transition into the role of a registered nurse. Throughout the paid program, learning and nursing engagement occurs on a 24hr per unit basis in a broad range of acute care, critical care, emergency care, psychiatry, women's & children, surgical/outpatient areas. SNEs gain hands-on experience in:

• Patient Care.


• Teamwork, Critical Thinking, Communication Skills


• Professional Development.

How you’ll contribute

A Student Nurse Extern I who excels in this role:

• Works collaboratively with the patient care team.


• Performs direct patient care under the direction, delegation and supervision of a registered nurse.


• Documents patient care given.


• Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to supervising RN.


• Maintains positive professional relationship with patient/ families, coworkers, and health care team.


• Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.


• Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.


• Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.


• Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well‑being of the patient.


• Supports performance improvement philosophy.
