Job description

The Student Navigator will be responsible for coordinating and conducting new student orientation, focused academic advising, and student support services to help students persist in their program of study. The Student Navigator is the “go‑to” person to help students through the college experience by providing services that include, but are not limited to, orientation, student advisement, academic progress review (traditional, online, and hybrid), collaboration with faculty, and development and coordination of retention and attrition efforts for new and continuing students. The Student Navigator gathers statistical information and develops strategies to promote student satisfaction, persistence to graduation, job placement, and licensure.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates new student orientation and monitors student progress through program completion by providing support as necessary.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with all college offices, departments, faculty, and staff to facilitate advisement, academic progress review, and implement innovative retention programs and services for new, at‑risk, and enrolled students that attribute to persistence to graduation.
  • Provides information and resources on targeted career and educational pathways.
  • Co‑ordinates and/or provides supportive services to students to support academic persistence and success.
  • Monitors student attendance, performance, and academic progress in collaboration with faculty.
  • Coordinates services with relevant college departments and community agencies; making referrals when necessary.
  • Attends academic advising training, department, and division meetings when applicable.
  • Solicits student feedback and experience with career services programs.
  • Coordinates, tracks, reports, and uses retention data research and analysis, using the Student Management System (SMS), Student Engagement Tracking System (SETS) and other resources, to identify obstacles to student achievement and retention.
  • Designs, coordinates, and targets new intervention services, programs, and initiatives focused on student retention and development.
  • Functions as part of an early alert team to support college persistence and retention.
  • Participates in opportunities to increase and share knowledge about the role of the student navigator to improve resources, strategies, and college policies and procedures.
  • Remains abreast of new resources, technology, information, and student support strategies.
  • Assists with on‑campus testing in a proctoring or room monitoring position.
  • Participates in the College Student Navigator peer group.
  • Identifies opportunities that benefit the student.
  • Gains insight into student needs.
  • Must be able to exercise initiative and independent judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
Equipment / Software
  • Use office machines such as telephones, copiers, and computer.
  • Proficient in computer programs utilized which include electronic mail, Colleague (college database system), Windows XP, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Working Conditions

The following physical conditions and hazards may be encountered in this position. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • The position may also require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Education, Experience, and Licenses / Certifications

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is preferred, but a combination of education and experience may be considered.
